That's a great idea, the only issue I see is having them in a dropdown like headlines, which can quickly become very limited. There is potentially a long list of special chars that could be listed there, and if we give devs the possibility to edit this list it can quickly become very long.

Maybe more a custom dialog / glyph palette?

I really like the to have a glyphs palette, like e.g. in InDesign. Only problem with that: If you got it as a modal, it’s very distracting. But you don’t want to have a floating window in a web-app either, as that does not work well on mobile. Let’s move this aside for now and focus on the planned features. Maybe optional, separate buttons for the most important features would be fine, depending on usage context.

For my work, having the characters listed above available at my fingertips would be everything I need. For other chars, which I do not use quite as often, using the built-in char table of macOS is just fine. But this is a feature, that really seems to need more discussion … let’s do this once we got the time for it. It will also help us to see how the editor works in the wild to see what our users (and ourselves) really need.

Closing this, as we now have a generic extension API and I personally don’t have any resources to work on this.
