For completeness, I had to upgrade the following versions in the pom.xml

        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.jetbrains</groupId>
            <artifactId>annotations</artifactId>
            <version>24.0.1</version>
        </dependency>
        <dependency>
            <groupId>net.openhft</groupId>
            <artifactId>affinity</artifactId>
            <version>3.23.3</version>
            <exclusions>
                <exclusion>
                    <artifactId>slf4j-api</artifactId>
                    <groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
                </exclusion>
            </exclusions>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>net.openhft</groupId>
            <artifactId>chronicle-wire</artifactId>
            <version>2.22.22</version>
            <exclusions>
                <exclusion>
                    <artifactId>slf4j-api</artifactId>
                    <groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
                </exclusion>
            </exclusions>
        </dependency>

and change the the following in DiskSerializationProcessor:

bytes.release(ReferenceOwner.INIT); // Add ReferenceOwner.INIT
