Actually, I've decided to just go with aws s3 sync and set the headers there. It's around 10x faster. I'll close this for now.

I'm guessing that aws s3 sync uses parallel uploads. Not an option for me, as I'm stuck with integrating with collectstatic.
I'm reopening this, as it's a nice idea.

Sounds good. For what it's worth I think the main speedup is keeping the connection open and not necessarily parallelism. I'm not sure if Django makes a new storage instance for every file or something, but collectstatic spends most of its time opening and closing connections.

Interesting. The s3 boto library is supposed to use a connection pool.
Honestly, though, it's a crap library, so I wouldn't be suprised if it was
cocking this up.
