I've found a way to make it works, reading EthereumHF go-ethereum issue 1326:
geth --datadir "/tmp/another/data/dir" attach ipc:/tmp/another/data/dir/geth.ipc
i don't know if this was by design or simply a trick, but it looks so ugly
from go-ethereum.

Thanks. I was wondering how to fix this. It is ugly though. This poorly thought-out stuff in geth is annoying. Another one: the --genesis command-line option was first deprecated and then removed. Now you don't even get an error message pointing you to the new, correct usage when attempting to use the option.
