There's definitely room for improvement, but this currently isn't a major issue for us at Lyft.

Here's what engine building and engine running durations look like at the 50th, 90th and 99th percentile bands for our iOS apps in production:

Keep in mind that the app is doing a lot of other work that's unrelated to networking during this time because we initialize Envoy as one of the first things during app startup.

Since this isn't a current area of focus, I'll be closing this issue, though that doesn't mean that we won't look into improving the performance here in the future.
