If I'm not mistaken, besides executing queries, PDO is used to quote. If this could be decoupled, then the SQL query builder classes could be decoupled from PDO.

FluentPDO extend PDO, it can't be used without it. IMHO PDO is best way how to use databases in PHP. There isn't any reason why don't use it. On the other hand feel free and fork FluentPDO and rewrite it without PDO if you really want.

@lichtner I agree with you about PDO as well. Dealing with a legacy application though that didn't use PDO, so trying to at least make the SQL query building better than concatenating strings.
I may also take the time to fork and decouple the SQL query building from PDO.
