We have solved #75 for now, but it'd be good to reduce friction and simplify the code – it's unreasonably complicated as is. Perhaps we should make better use of CloudFormation and incorporte #76, and then combine the templates into a single nested stack somehow. It should be possible to compose the nested stack in Go, to allow more flexibility around how it's all done and cater for optional VPC (#42, #50) etc.

With #127 and #76 being fixed, and thereby leading to significant changes, I'd rather postpone this until later.
