That is an interesting use case.
I'm not sure if I can do something about it but I will give it a try.

I will try to add a parameter to the control : ex. 'Keep existing unlisted value' (Yes/No)

Now if this param is set to YES,
The value should be kept and displayed in the field (maybe grayed out)

I will keep you posted and maybe send you an early version for you to test.
