This mostly works, aside from a bit of an issue when using shift-click. See this video for more details:

Basically, shift+click makes it show the first-clicked item if the selection switches to go above the first-selected item.

Even though this is closed, the issue with shift+click still exists. Maybe that should be in a new issue.
