It usually only happens when you try to areaselect items, known bug #9

Arghh !
I spent 4 hours to try to fix this bug :(
And I succeeded... Too late....
My fix is really different than yours, without removing timeout_id.

I don't know how that stupid list free code could survive that long. Anyways - it's just a temporary thing. I rewrote the whole input event system. It just has a few rough edges before I will push it maybe this weekend (thus the word temporary in the commit message). After all you fixed it too ;) no need to go argh.
I removed timeout_id because the whole timer thing is pointless if you can do it eventbased.
