@jolestar That's not the purpose of this action but you could do something like this:

- run: echo "SHA=${GITHUB_SHA::8}" >> $GITHUB_ENV
- run: echo "Short commit hash: ${{ env.SHA }}"

I also have a similar workaround.
The workaround seems even more hacky when you need to pass the tag to a separate deploy task, like:

 - name: 'Deploy'
   uses: some-org/some-deploy-action@v2
   with: 
     tag:  ${{ needs.build.outputs.image_tag }}

A workaround method:

- name: Example deploy
run: |
  SHA=$(git rev-parse --short=7 HEAD);
  deploy **regist.ry/app:sha-${SHA}**
