dnscrypt.ca Removal about dnscrypt-resolvers HOT 4 CLOSED

My resolvers are VPSs with 1 core and 1GB memory each. It is actually getting harder to find VPSs that small these days. Even with unmetered bandwidth (they use about 65GB per day) these have only been costing me US$40 per year for both. I did scramble to see what I could find for a replacement, but nothing in Canada comes close to that. I am well aware of the fact that my VPS provider has effectively been partially funding dnscrypt.ca, and sincerely appreciate their help and patience. Unfortunately for an old retired guy the cost increase isn't as trivial as it may be for many people, and combined with some non-digital real-life obligations I feel like it is time to throw in the towel.

Having said that, over the last few weeks I have been in contact with Alex who runs https://dnscry.pt/ and find him to be friendly and approachable. His DNS related values align well with mine (DNSSEC, no filtering, no logging, etc.), he has told me that he has available capacity on his Canadian servers (Montreal and Toronto), and he says he welcomes traffic from dnscrypt.ca refugees. I believe it is important for users to personally evaluate DNS providers/policies, and choose providers that suit them best. I also believe dnscry.pt services are worth being investigated as part of that process.

I hope that none of the dnscrypt.ca users will fall back to clear text DNS or services managed by corporate stooges, and tip my hat to the DNSCrypt community that has given me the tools to run dnscrypt.ca for almost seven years.

Thank you for having operated these resolvers until now. They certainly were very useful to a lot of people.

Maybe you should add instructions on how to make a donation, right on the dnscrypt.ca home page. Maybe it's not too late.

Also I see you were still running dnscrypt-wrapper and the Go DoH server. For the same traffic, you may get away with a smaller instance just by upgrading the encrypted-dns-server and doh-server.
