In that case I would suggest a solution flexible and generic enough that allow to support "gridFTP-like" solution is needed. We may need a discussion?

metson: Agreed, I think the solution is a few pluggable solutions; http(s), gftp, scp determined from the URI (e.g. use the gridftp plugin if the sandbox is at gftp://some.se/file).

IMHO #681 should be closed as a duplicate...

We could probably do this as an extension to the Service class, which would provide some basic caching. HTTP(S) transfers are an out of the box thing, gridftp etc would be new.
