I think we should mention, at least here, that 3311a9a from 21st of February provides a way to work around this issue.

If the response sets the X-PJAX-URL header, its value will be used when pushing the state and updating the browser address bar, instead of using the original URL that the request was sent to.

So, just to be safe, one could always mark his PJAX responses with that header and this will no longer be an issue.

For Rails they have a special helper for this:

I think there are some constrains in making this "just work" because ajax requests automatically resolve redirects.

Yeah, just double checked.

Theres no way to know if an XHR object followed a redirect and what url it ended up at.

Kind of sucks, but you'll have to resort to server side hacks to send state back to the browser so it can tell.
