Provided you aren't ignoring any required arguments (i.e. those without defaults), which in the case of add_item is only title, you can do this:

add_item(**args)

where args is a dict of {'title': 'sometitle', 'subtitle': 'whatever' … }

You just need to put ** before your dict. ** tells Python to unpack the dictionary into function/method arguments. Similarly, if you have a list of arguments, e.g. ['mytitle', 'mysubtitle', 'myarg'], you can use add_item(*args) with one asterisk.
