Correction, it doesn't ever technically crash any of the subsequent times, it just hangs with only one of the controller slots showing up as an X and nothing but "Pro controller connected." in the dialogue box
from betterjoy.

Ok this is interesting (sorry for all these comments, I'm sitting here trying to troubleshoot): if you plug the controller in via USB and attempt to start the program, it briefly shows two controllers, then "drops" one of them. After starting it like this and unplugging the controller the application will respond normally
from betterjoy.
