gets stuck on travis while running annex command about datalad HOT 4 CLOSED

with improved debugging output in the last commit got this

use of a PPA with a bit freshier annex resolved the issue

I had someone else report what looks like the same problem: http://git-annex.branchable.com/forum/Git_annex_hangs

I guess this is a mismatch between the version of git that git-annex was built with and the version it's using. In particular, git check-attr behavior varies between git older than 1.7.7 and newer, and git-annex picks the version at build time.

What PPA was being used when you had the problem?

I have used no PPA, so it was original old precise I guess.
