Some info like the list of tables that reference a given table appear impossible without querying the information schema.

No, our server started crashing intermittently on queries to the information schema. It's probably due to a corrupted file somewhere. show create table on the same schema never caused any problems. While the underlying problem is unknown, queries to the information schema probably involve more work and longer locks than other queries. Additionally, show create table is standard SQL while queries to the information schema are MySQL specific.

We haven't had any more crashes. Does it make sense to avoid queries to the information_schema whenever we can help it?

It may make sense when there are obvious alternatives. But, as you pointed out, there are a few pieces of information we cannot obtain otherwise.
