The BUG was not related to the blast.c code after all. It was caused by a misaligned read of the header size from the file, where the original code read an integer (potentially 32 or 64 bits) and the header size is just 16 bits, resulting in undefined behaviour (and core dumps on Solaris).
Also, the header size code was not platform independent, which would cause problems in Solaris SPARC by reading incorrect header sizes. Both issues were fixed in the latest release.
