Update: I fixed this by using .interrupt() on all elements in componentWillUnmount.
I believe this is due to scheduled animations still being fired after a component is unmounted.

Can't you just call timer.stop()?

This seems like it has to do with d3-transition than d3-timer, and I second the recommendation above: you should use selection.interrupt if you want to cancel transitions on removed elements.
