@lagerratrobe do you plan on talking about GDAL? I'm looking for what the best way to build a transition from shapefiles to geojsons might be without getting overwhelming on the command line.

@svmatthews, @lagerratrobe if you need geojson and don't want to go down the CLI route at all, you can use QGIS. just selected out the Great Lakes from a Natural Earth SHP in QGIS, and 'Saved As' geojson. See https://gist.github.com/mattmakesmaps/11311711
Note. Originally tried to post whole 50m_lakes_utf8.shp dataset to github gist, but looks like it was too large to render.

I don't really have specific to add except this is really cool here..have not seen github use for this purpose :) like to see how one gets started to use this function. see you monday.

I think that's a great idea, using QGIS. I'll stick with that and describe what a geojson is - but won't get too heavy into the javascript of it all.
Is anyone going to have QGIS running at the class?

I have prepared a 5-10 minute talk entitled "Getting in the Door - for Open Source and GIS people" - it's only 4 slides long, but gives some gentle suggestions as to how to get some street cred so as to get the attention of a hiring manager who sees 100 resumes for each entry level position. I'd like to do this talk before everyone else's technical talks or after everyone else's technical talks (but not both).
Plus, of course, the panel session. I will provide you all with a seed list of questions/answers/topics to liven things up if the audience is sleepy.

Wish I could make this but it's a long plane flight! Will this session be
recorded possibly and put on YouTube?
