letterpaper是article文档类的缺省参数，和TeX Live的纸张选项（输出驱动的纸张尺寸设定）是两回事。另外如果这两样不一致的话，\paperheight和\paperwidth以及页边距等可能与实际纸张尺寸有冲突，这是必须靠geometry宏包来控制的，宏包针对不同的驱动改primitive或者写\special。
这一点不太好写，不好在一开头就交待geometry宏包。可行的写法是在geometry那一节厘清文档类参数和geometry参数的区别和关系。

texlive确实缺省大小为a4paper，但是修改文档类参数后查看PDF属性发现“页面大小”确实修改过了
