There is one mechanism currently within CrossRef as it is now where this data could live. CrossMark allows publishers to deposit arbitrary key/value assertions. Getting a group or many publishers to agree on depositing that sort of data is the problem. And this problem isn't technical * - it is a problem of editorial policies, author and production people buy-in and recognition of the value of this kind of structured data.

Maybe what we need is a place for authors to deposit assertions with CrossRef that will augment our publisher-sourced records. But then you've got to get that system used by authors.

'*' Actually I think it is also technical, but by and large the technical aspect has been solved. CrossRef and its many integrations exist - it can be altered to receive whatever kinds of data we decide, and it can disseminate that data. What we need now is drive to push new kinds of data into CrossRef.
