Does it work with podman machine ssh

There are two ways to create the machine rootless/rootful that decides under which user the containers are run in the VM. So if you setup rootless then when you enter you need to make sure to switch to the users in the VM otherwise run as root.

That was my issue! I created the machine as rootful this time around. Thanks for the help!
