I try to put them in alphabetical order too but I haven't been very careful when doing that. I understand @JanSchulz point: people usually try to contact the first name on the list. However, we are in the GitHub era (death to e-mail 😈), and it is easy for people asking help to just ping all names listed in the recipes and wait for the first one to respond. So I would be OK enforcing an alphabetical order.

These must be github handles? Or are mailinglists allowed?
Github handles. They are what goes into managing the conda-forge teams.

Always GitHub handles. I mentioned (and ended up mixing) the old way of listing maintainers e-mails in spec files (RPMs), where the main maintainer being on top was important, just to make a point that I don't think it is too important here.

Shouldn't the main maintainer be at the top, so that if someone contacts them, they start at the top?

That is certainly one way of sorting the maintainers. Another is to add them chronologically. @jakirkham seems to have adopted alphabetical ordering and I can certainly see its merits (it encourages the thought: there aren't different classes of maintainers, so if you are listed as a maintainer you should try to maintain the feedstock, not rely on the person above you in the list).
Honestly though, I'm OK with whatever. I just wanted to reflect what is currently being practiced.
