Here's a plnkr with a pared down version of what I'm doing. Unfortunately, the drag/drop doesn't actually work in the plnkr, and I'm not sure why, but I thought seeing how I wired things up might indicate some obvious problem to you for the helper function.

I'll keep trying to get the drag/drop working so it's a functioning sample, but as you can see, the helper function is declared on the same scope as the availableDatastreams, in the directive's controller.

1. You forgot to inject 'ngDragDrop in the main module because of which drag/drop was not functional.
2. You can not pass a string as a function name in helper which is bound to $scope to which jQueryUI is unaware of. To fix this, you need to pass a proper function.

I've abstracted jqyoui-options as $scope.opts in the directive's controller.
