Why not use this approach without modifying angular-dragdrop.js?

Although dropCallback gives you access to ui which leads to ui.draggable that carries the reference of the actual element exists, its safe to use angular.element(ui.draggable) in a controller as its not an implicit DOM manipulation.

$scope.dropCallback = function(event, ui) {
  return angular.element(ui.draggable).scope().$eval(
    angular.element(ui.draggable).attr('ng-model')
  );
};

from angular-dragdrop.
