Of note, I believe, that one implication to consider is that without "official support", the precompiled igb_uio.ko kernel modules will not be available on Linux distro/versions that aren't marked as officially supported.
Example,
$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS \n \l
$ sudo ./t-rex-64 -f cap2/dns.yaml -c 4 -m 1 -d 10 -l 1000
Trying to bind to vfio-pci ...
Trying to compile and bind to igb_uio ...
ERROR: We don't have precompiled igb_uio.ko module for your kernel version
Will try compiling automatically - make sure you have file-system read/write permission
ERROR: Automatic compilation failed: ([Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'make')
(of course, installing kernel-devel + build-essentials allows for auto-compilation)

Have tested CentOS/RHEL 7.5, and it works with MLX CX-4 FYI.

We have a few setups (~40). every setup is with different distro/NICs/firmware/
The documents is a bit old and we can't track all the distro/firmware/hardware combination
We observed that Mellanox CX-5 is the most vulnerable to distro version/OFED version
suggest to add a wiki page that users can add what works for then

Thanks Hanoh, makes sense.
Where is best that you can suggest for a "community accessible" contribution wiki here? (wasn't aware that TRex project had a wiki system as such)

I think it would be nice to rely on DPDK support in distributions.
Could we consider that any DPDK feature not working with TRex is a bug in DPDK?
If TRex uses LTS versions of DPDK, any bug can be fixed in the LTS branch.
If I understand well, it would require to link an external upstream DPDK.
