IMHO, this is the "standard" way of using numpy imports.
I dislike this practice (e.g. import numpy as np
, import pandas as pd
) since I think it leads to namespace obfuscation, but agree that this can be useful for very long imports (e.g. import simtk.openmm.app as app
or from simtk.openmm import app
), but maybe this dislike is not sufficiently strong to defy convention.
Also, it might be good to try to use all numpy, whenever possible, rather than switching between math and numpy

is that it discourages the use from numpy import *
. It's kind of like a nicotine patch...
