Fail early when missing required programs about vhs HOT 3 CLOSED

Yeah sounds good, we can probably introduce an Exec command or a Wait command to handle that use case for waiting for programs to terminate.

Personally, I think I like the Require option the best. It allows people to manually control dependencies of their tape file and since it's all optional it can be added after the original tape is written and people can quickly glance and see what they need installed on their computer at the top of the tape file before running it and VHS can warn them immediately rather than waiting for the failure to happen later on in the process.

I would really love the Exec one, but for a different reason: so I don't need to manage the sleep times while my program is running.

For the issue you proposed alone, Require seems good as well.
The set -e like thingy I find a bit weird tbh...
