Why isn't this Wikispecies? about general HOT 3 CLOSED

So far the CoL has not decided to be a community-edited taxonomy. There is still access control mapping sectors in the tree to certain working groups aka GSDs and the nomenclators. Future governance and engagement should be discussed more. An interesting vision is to build up a CoL purely from digitized literature ala Plazi and engage researchers via the classic way of publishing articles. To assemble a consensus or better consistent taxonomy would then only require selecting the "good" published articles, remove all editing and base all data on actual publications. Quite some digitization needed to get there of course, but for the long term vision rather neat.

@mdoering From my perspective these access controls are likely to be self-defeating, many of the issues with the current CoL stem from exactly this partitioning up of the tree into GSDs. The literature vision makes sense, and is getting a lot closer to being feasible...

I'd rather see and start with a community-curated nomenclature or, at the least, a community edited taxonomy that separates the nomenclatural facts for re-use for other taxonomic assertions.
