I think something was wrong with my SD card. It was a Class 10 SDHC but switching to another Class 10 card fixed my problem. Thanks!

Well, tbh, I don't know. I haven't noticed and nobody else reported time out errors so far, so I'd suspect something with your SD card probably.
It's caused by not receiving an interrupt signal (which the code polls in https://github.com/bztsrc/raspi3-tutorial/blob/master/0B_readsector/sd.c#L131). You can either try to increase the counter by tenfold there (add a zero to cnt in line 134), or try to use a Class 10 SDHC card. I have only those, and they are working perfectly.

So, this tutorial can only work on Class 10 instead of SDHC?
