I can add this! Should this have higher or lower priority over directly checking mypackage.__version__? My gut says higher priority. Or would directly checking mypackage.__version__ be redundant (is it already handled by importlib)?

Yes, importlib should be at the highest priority because it's the "official" way. __version__ seems to be more of a style guide and common practice than an established standard. Regarding whether to check for both or not, unfortunately I'm not well versed on the actual workings of importlib so I don't have anything to say here.
