What do you mean ?
The only case where I need mapping is to force some field type (eg http
code are int, not string).
In most of cases, there is no need of mapping.

but (and I'm a newbie to ElasticSearch) if someone has to make a mapping (in my case adding geodata and I don't want it to apply stopwords to country codes) they have to start from scratch, unless this can be configured per field.

I don't think this is resolved since a mapping would be helpful, but I'm closing this in the hopes it will encourage you to continue dev. (=
