I've considered that in the past, but I think it would be misleading to force it to add a newline, as that is not the behaviour of echo, and the REPL is supposed to help you figure out how PHP works.

I see your point. Did you check how IRB does it?

$ irb
irb(main):001:0> printf "hello, %s", "world"
hello, world=> nil
irb(main):002:0> printf "hello, %s\n", "world"
hello, world
=> nil
irb(main):003:0> 

Maybe thats an option?

Zsh will append a percent sign to let you know that its automatically appended a newline, eg:

> echo -n "asdf"
asdf%
>
