The fix is to reset all the values after 1000ms on inactivity from the input-device (no new events). This might cause problems if you have an input-device where you can set a fixed value. As of now the only fix for this is to re-implement the input-device backend (not using PyGame/SDL) as described in #10, #11 and #12.
Another option might be to try to re-scan to check if the input-device has been disconnected. Re-scanning can only be done when the joystick subsystem has been de-initalized and this will affect the input-device.
