Jeff's Points:

Social Media is an invaluable tool for developing social networks. Networking doesn't have to be icky; oftentimes it's just about finding people with your same interests. Sharing and commenting on papers and projects (your own and others) you are passionate about is one way to build your network.

My own thoughts:

  1. Twitter is good for figuring out who you'd like to meet by "pre-interacting" with them. Look for hashtags that interest you (such as #rstats or #datascience) and ask questions or join a discussion.
  2. Meetups (especially the Data Science Meetups) are a great way to meet people. View talks at such meetups as an invitation for discussion rather than a lecture.
