I think this sounds reasonable, but I don’t think it should apply to all textures in StandardMaterial, as a tradeoff of improving batching.

Looking through the textures in StandardMaterial IT feels like base_color and maybe normal maps are very commonly used, and then most of the others, not as much. I’m very open to thoughts on that.
As another possibility, instead of necessarily basing whether to use a shader def to specialise the shader based only on the presence of a texture handle, we could introduce an enum that has Disabled, UseDummyTexture, and Texture(Handle) or something. That would enable manual tweaking of desired behaviour and we can configure the defaults.
