I'm suggesting that in the README, it might be worth it to tell people how to avoid 406 errors. You could say something like this:

Don't forget to respond to the json format in your update action. Here is an example, taken from the test_app's users controller

@user = User.find(params[:id])

respond_to do |format|
  if @user.update_attributes(params[:user])
    format.html { redirect_to(@user, :notice => 'User was successfully updated.') }
    format.json { head :ok }
  else
    format.html { render :action => "edit" }
    format.json  { render :json => @user.errors.full_messages, :status => :unprocessable_entity }
  end
end

There is already a section in the readme about server side validations, probably this issue is too old.
