They sell them on a regular basis at https://www.massdrop.com/buy/ergodox

from ergodox-firmware.

Lol. Judging by the fact that we're discussing this on github, a kit from Massdrop is indeed probably what you want -- they tend to run about $200 shipped.

That said, all the design files are open source, you can buy (white) PCBs here, and switches here (among other places), you can get all the electronics from digikey (though I think I got my cables elsewhere), and if the switches you buy are PCB mount you can live without a case (my prototype has yoga mat sewn under the PCB, in lieu of a case) :) .

Alternately, I have a board assembled with reds and case mods (countersunk screws, rounded edges, LEDs in the case above the Teensy instead of in the switches under 3 of the keys) -- but I'm hoping for about $400 (plus shipping?). I also have an aluminum case kit from the first drop that I'd be willing to sell at cost + shipping, but the case needs a lot of work (which is why they only offered those on the first drop).

These pics are of a similar board with browns, which I'm also thinking of selling. If you wanna get a Massdrop kit and do the same mods, you might see this old post I made on Geekhack. :)

Yup, Massdrop is the way to go. They have a new drop every few months. Good
stuff, got 2 sets and and extra set of pcb's with no problem.
You will want to have your soldering skills up to par though, it can be a
bit tricky and takes about 5 hours to build from start to finish. I think
that in some cases,
for a bit more, you can get them pre-assembled.

I've put together 3 from Massdrop, and if you're handy with a soldering iron and decently careful, they're a piece of cake. 👍

thanks all! I've bought a soldering iron to perform some open heart surgery on my kinesis (it lives!) so it sounds like I'd survive. But the time investment is more than I'd like. Where does one buy the pre-assembled keyboards?

Also, can you recommend a good place to get custom keycaps printed so that they last? A problem with the kinesis is that the keycaps are so varied that custom sets cost a fortune.

Sometimes it's a $20 add on to some of the ergodox drops. As for keycaps,
you can pick them up there as well, just don't get the ones that are in the
ergodox drop. They were all the same shape and to flat for my tastes. I got
me a nice set of clear sculpted caps later from massdrop that I'm really
happy with. http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/ also caries caps and the like. On
a side note, it did take some time to build but it was a pretty fun project
over all.

@P4r4d0x42 I'm specifically looking for custom printed keycaps, not blank ones... do you know anyone that does that? If I can send an svg per keycap that's ideal.

As an alternative to Massdrop there's czarek's thread on deskthority. He also offers an assembly service. It might be cheaper (at least in Europe) and you don't have to wait for the next drop.

@fommil you can have custom keys printed at http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/ however IIRC the keys that you can have printed are only DCS which have the profiling that a normal board would have, not DSA like most of the massdrop drops I've seen.

Also signatureplastics.com will make sets custom for you.
