It definitely looks like the version of rtl-sdr you're using is the culprit. I would definitely build rtl-sdr from source. You also no longer need libfftw3 or libfftw3-dev for rtlamr, it's now pure go. The rtl-sdr tools don't seem to have any version reporting built in so I have no idea what minimum revision is necessary for this project.

Thanks for the reply (I didn't notice your earlier one). I'll try an rtl-sdr newer than the one Ubuntu provides.

You might have better luck building from source, it's a fairly straight-forward process: http://sdr.osmocom.org/trac/wiki/rtl-sdr#Buildingthesoftware
