Comparing QSPI flash vs. SD card for this project:

  • Neither has a HAL driver written in the stm32f7xx-hal repo, so I will need to program registers directly.
  • The development board used for prototyping (STM32F746 Disco) has a QSPI flash chip on it (MT25QL128ABA - 128 Mb/16MB). It also has a micro SD card connector, but I would need to go buy a micro SD card.
  • QSPI flash requires 6 wires, SD card requires 12 wires.
  • While the current QSPI flash chip is 16 MB, in theory we could use up to a 4 GB chip on the STM32F746 part. The micro SD card is a minimum of 2 GB, increasing a lot from there.
  • QSPI peripheral on the STM32F746 has an indirect mode (programming registers directly for each transaction), it also has a memory mapped mode. SDMMC peripheral looks more complex...

Seems like for prototyping purposes I will use QSPI flash - no extra hardware needed, simpler peripheral, lower pin count, and enough memory to test out saving frames. An NVM layer will be created to abstract the operations in case SD card is used in the future.
