Dealing with SMTP over TLS/SSL could be real hard. I managed to find some discussion on openssl group with similar issue, maybe this can help https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mailing.openssl.users/PysAVeqBUfQ.

However, are you sure that you need this? If you want just to play around and catch local mails, you can use something like mailcatcher (http://mailcatcher.me/).

PS: actually, i wrote this project as beginner myself, and it uses quite old version of rails. So if you are looking for some good examples of rails projects, that's definetly not one of them.
