Hey Michael, thanks for reporting this. Is this affecting you when you work with S3, or is this just a problem trying to use the SDK with other server responses?

This is currently not a problem with S3, but with another "S3 compatible" service.
However, it could be, for example with a http proxy in between the client and S3.

I am creating a http encryption proxy in between the client and S3 and I encountered the same problem.
My proxy receives the response from S3 without the ETag set in the header, then when my proxy forwards the response to the Java client, it throws this NullPointerException on BinaryUtils.java:72 .

Oh I found my error, my proxy replied a 200 Ok whereas S3 replied a 404 Not Found.

Closing since this is not necessarily a problem with accessing Amazon S3. Please submit a pull request if you need this changed.
