Clearing is not the expected behavior. This behavior might however make sense under a special flag / attribute. Changing this to a feature request.

With our new authenticator component error messages are now cleared.
Error messages no longer appear as toast messages. They are displayed below the input boxes.
After logging in the error disappears. Or the user can click the 'x' button.
Please try out this new authenticator, it's under the @next tag. Let us know if this solves your problem.
