It does not require a readme.md file. It might still be referenced by your pyproject.toml. Deleting the reference there should resolve it.

Thank you for workaround.
For my context, rye init was creating the pyproject.toml. and i've not modified it myself in anyway. are you @mitsuhiko expecting this? if no,feel free to reopen issue for the future PR ref.
