This is a Ruby 1.9 problem. In some ways, Ruby 1.9 has worse UTF-8 support than Ruby 1.8 because it enforced declaring files with characters outside of the BMP to have the utf-8 magic header in the source code. Ruby 1.8 didn't support unicode much at all, but it also didn't complain about this.

The solution is two-fold:

a) add the utf-8 magic header to the source file
b) advocate the use of Ruby 2.0, which actually handles unicode correctly :)

I'll take care of (a) for alpha.2.

I verified this will work in 1.5.0.alpha.2.

I can confirm the problem went away using Ruby 2.0.
