This happens with the fopub backend too. I have this in my files:

ifndef::pdf[]
toc::[]
endif::[]

And I usually pass the attribute pdf when building for that. Same happends with the size of the images, they have to be different for pdf and html backends so I control the size with the pdfattribute too.

Great suggestion David!

We've been working to pass consistent attributes for the various backends to alleviate the burden of having to define these attributes yourself. Once Asciidoctor PDF is a formal converter (see #29), you'll be able to do:

ifndef::backend-pdf[]
toc::[]
endif::[]

Note that we still need to implement manual placement for the toc. But for now, at least the processor doesn't crash if a toc macro is used. Instead, it inserts the toc in the predetermined location.
