As you already figured out, Google denies access for "insecure apps" for some time...
For me, I could fix that by
- enabling 2FA for my GMail Account
so 2) you are allowed to create App-Passwords (This is only possible if 2FA is enabled)

I Have the same problem. Gmail authentication stopped working suddenly. Seems to be some change at google since even a direct smtp connection is not working anymore.

I've solved by going to https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha this link and perform the unlock procedure

Hello Giacomo,
Thx for your reply, completely missed it. I allowed "insecure apps"
access in the google account used with the extension and still, the
connectivity test from within Magento fails with "Access Denied".
