Nope, this is from the .schema file..
<schema>
<key>/schemas/apps/gnome-mplayer/preferences/disable_deinterlace</key>
<applyto>/apps/gnome-mplayer/preferences/disable_deinterlace</applyto>
<owner>gnome-mplayer</owner>
<type>bool</type>
<default>TRUE</default>
<locale name="C">
<short>Disable Deinterlace filter</short>
<long>When set to TRUE the usage of the deinterlace filter is disabled</long>
</locale>
</schema>
As you can see disable_deinterlace should be defaulted to true.
I guess this could be no happening on your machine, if the schema didn't get
applied.
Or gconf didn't pick this up.
However, I went ahead and set disable_deinterlace to true in the code prior to
this
value being retrieved from gconf in SVN.

Thanks :) I can be 100% sure it was bugged because this was a whole new, fresh
install of Ubuntu Alpha4 and I compiled your terrific app onto it.
